It is deep into the summer season, and by now you could be seeing the growth of your tomatoes or peppers. Perhaps you are even taking out the garlic you planted in October. Maybe you thought you missed your window to grow vegetables, but I have great news– You still have time!
While it may be too close a call to grow vegetables like onions or pumpkins from seeds, there still other vegetable that you can grow for the rest of the season!
10 Vegetables you can grow this month
Ideally you would want to plant fast-growing plants to produce in time before the frost sets in. New York City lands in zone 7 of the growing map, so here are 10 vegetables you can plant today:
- Carrots ( For a Fall Harvest) – Plant in late July for sweet fall carrots. Use a deep container or loose soil bed
- Bush Beans– Fast-growing (50–60 days) and thrive in summer heat. Great for succession planting.
- Cucumbers– Still time for a fresh crop. Choose compact or pickling varieties for quicker maturity.
- Swiss Chard– Heat-tolerant and productive through summer into fall. Continual harvest possible.
- Green Onions / Scallions– Quick to grow and can be harvested multiple times. Ideal for containers or borders.
- Kale– Tolerates heat and improves in flavor with cooler fall temperatures. Sow seeds now for a fall crop
- Turnips– Fast-growing root crop with edible greens. Plant now for early fall harvest
- Collard Greens– Loves heat and becomes more tender after a light frost. Can be harvested well into fall
- Beets– Plant by late July for a fall harvest. Both roots and greens are edible and nutrient-rich
- Lettuce (heat-tolerant types)– Try varieties like ‘Buttercrunch’ or ‘Jericho’. Provide afternoon shade to prevent bolting.
Tip for July Planting in Zone 7:
Keep soil moist, use mulch to retain water, and consider afternoon shade or row covers to protect seedlings from intense heat.
Make sure that you feed your soil so it can feed your plants!
Plants can grow Year around
With different plants, you can always have something in your garden, it just comes down to timing and determination. July is not the only month left to grow either!
